"The Tree of Life"

The "Tree of Life" was a very important commission for me and for the parishioners that I created it for. After several meetings with the community I came up with the design. The committee had asked me a question that I thought was strange coming from a Catholic community. The parishioner asked me what I would tell my children about this piece. So see below what I gave them in writing as to the meaning of this spiritual art piece.

The free-standing crucifix invites us to draw close. Jesus is depicted at the moment of transition from death into life. His gaze is fixed on the Kingdom of God. He is crucified but he is no longer bound to the cross, the tree of life, to sin, to suffering, to all he came to change. He hangs from the tree -a symbol of life- because his death brought life to the world. This tree has roots because He is rooted in us, his people, and the church is rooted in Him. The positioning of the cross is also important as the altar, the table where the sacrifice takes place, is shaded by the Tree of Life, Christ's Cross.
